The holiday blues
It is the most wonderful time of the year! Or is it?
A special energy of joy, excitement, anticipation and celebration emerges this time of the year. As contagious as this energy is, it sadly escapes many families and or individuals.
Families who are experiencing silent desperation as well as individuals who are suffering from the loneliness plague.
why do you ask?
There are too many scenarios to list in this blog. However, as varied as the circumstances are, there seems to be some predominant reasons for families and individuals to slip into depression during the holidays.
The common calls we receive during this time of the year are from families who live apart geographically. Adult children visiting mom or dad for the first time in a year notice the decline. they are baffled by the whole thing and often find themselves at a loss on what to do or where to start. they are witnessing unfavorable changes in their parents. At times, changes that can be harmful if overlooked. They may even be quietly asking the question” who are you and what have you done with my mother? ”
Other families call because the holiday season shed such a spotlight on mom or dad’s changed behavior. it is now undeniable! Christmas eve was their reality check. their loved ones could no longer compensate for their deficiencies. even the grand children took note.
Lastly, loneliness! some of the elderly experience suffer from it. that weighs heavy on my heart. their once busy even hectic lives during the holiday season is now void of visitors for one reason or another. it is just another day.
if you know of someone who can benefit from a couple of cookies and a smile, please take the step and visit.
if you know of a family who is struggling with their new reality, urge them to reach out for help sooner rather than later.
